For My Mother:

My mother gave me these hands
like her mother before her passing thread
through needle;
always bringing closer,
always holding together.
My mother gave me these hands,
the same ones she held so carefully
when I was younger
— like my sister before me —
the guardian to our unbroken bones.
How much love this woman has taught me;
how much strength; how much still
is left to learn.
My mother gave me these hands
which makes her own my greatest gift;
my true inheritance; my only
home.
