Wolf: Noun vs. Verb

No one can tell me anything.
I’ve heard too much. Listened
too closely. Let people press
their promises against me —
I kept holding.

No one can tell me anything,
though not for lack of trying —
just ask my mother who was
shocked at the wild thing
she produced — her baby
who broke everything
including herself.

She tried to warn me.

No one can tell me anything.
I don’t want to hear it anymore.
Your words won’t stay inside of me.
I cannot — will not — swallow
them.

No one can tell me anything —
except this voice of mine that never stops,
not even in the silence.
Oh, you should hear these thoughts.
A wild thing — I am a wild thing —
my mother tried to warn me.
