I didn’t banish the darkness; I sat with it until my eyes adjusted and revealed the world to me. I carried it; it kept me strong. Produced poems, and love letters, and torn apologies. It kept me true. Light reveals everything without choice. Darkness builds character, though you’ll meet some monsters, and a few of them will even be you; pieces and parts of your heart that are dead — you’ll sit back to back with them. And if it doesn’t kill you, you’ll come out the other side, and you’ll hold it always. Retreat there sometimes. Awe and worship at its indomitable spirit. Let it teach you. Maybe it’s not the best way to learn — you’ll collect your scars. But sometimes, when the darkness chooses you, you have to choose it back.
